How to calculate profit margin

Subtract cost from selling price to get gross profit. Divide that profit by the selling price and multiply by 100 to get profit margin.

Example: cost 60, sell 100Profit is 40. Margin is 40 ÷ 100 × 100 = 40%. Markup is 40 ÷ 60 × 100 = 66.67%.

Margin vs markup

Margin measures profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup measures profit as a percentage of cost. They describe the same transaction from different baselines, so the percentages are usually different.
