How ISO week numbers work

ISO 8601 numbers weeks from Monday through Sunday. Week 1 is the week containing January 4. Because of that rule, the first or last few days of a calendar year can belong to the neighboring ISO week-year.

Why the week-year can differA date near January 1 can still belong to the final ISO week of the previous year, and a late-December date can belong to week 1 of the next ISO year.
