How percentage change works

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the absolute old value, then multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.

Example: 100 to 125(125 − 100) ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%, so the value increased by 25%.

Important edge case

Percentage change from an old value of zero is mathematically undefined because the formula would require division by zero. The calculator reports this explicitly rather than inventing a percentage.
